Voyager will be releasing these beautiful hardback editions of A Song of Ice and Fire.

George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series has set the benchmark for contemporary epic fantasy. Labelled by Time magazine as one of the top 100 most influential people in the world, Martin has conjured a world as complex and vibrant as that of J.R.R. Tolkien’s, populated by a huge cast of fascinating, complex characters, and boasting a history that stretches back twelve thousand years.

Three great storylines weave through the books, charting the civil war for control of the Seven Kingdoms; the defence of the towering Wall of ice in the uttermost north against the unearthly threat of the Others; and across the Narrow Sea the rise to power of Daenerys Targaryen and the last live dragons in the world.

The first volume in the greatest epic work of the modern age

Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars, lords and honest men. All will play the Game of Thrones.

A major HBO series starring Sean Bean and a stellar cast.

Summers span decades. Winter can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun. It will stretch from the south, where heat breeds plot, lust and intrigues; to the vast frozen north, where a 700-foot wall of ice protects the kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyond.

The HBO adaptation aired this year to critical acclaim. Cut-throat, lavish and beautifully filmed, George Martin helped to produce a fantastic TV series.

Trailer – HBO Game of Thrones

HBO aired a teaser trailer for season two.

Screen rant has more to say on the trailer and season two. We’re already excited here at the Voyager office. We were looking into buying an iron throne – we’re not sure that we can get it signed off on expenses though!

The second volume

The first rule of war is never give the enemy his wish. But winter will be the biggest enemy. From beyond the Wall the undead and Others clamour for freedom, and from beyond the sea the long-dead Dragon King’s daughter hatches her revenge…

The covers

For these hardback covers we really wanted our design department to capture the style of A Dance with Dragons (ADwD). By bringing out the background texture, using a single light source on the crown and using the colour of the background in the tones of the metal, we were able to capture the design elements of ADwD but stay true to the original paperback designs.

The third volume

The Seven Kingdoms are divided by revolt and blood feud, and winter approaches like an angry beast. Beyond the Northern borders, wildlings leave their villages to gather in the ice and stone wasteland of the Frostfangs. From there, the renegade Brother Mance Rayder will lead them South towards the Wall.

For the hardback it made sense to put the two parts into the one book. We used the design element, the helmet, from part one as we thought the shield on part two was too similar to ADwD.

This is my favourite out of the new hardback covers. I think the cold feel of the helmet captures the mood of  the frozen North.

The fourth volume

A Feast for Crows brings to life dark magic, intrigue and terrible bloodshed as the war-torn landscape of the Seven Kingdoms is threatened by destruction as vast as any in its violent past. The War of the Five Kings has ripped Westeros apart. The bloodthirsty, treacherous and cunning Lannisters occupy the Iron Throne, with allies as ruthless as themselves. Lord Frey was host at the Red Wedding, so called for the massacre of the guests, their screams unheard above the music of the feast. Euron Crow’s Eye is as black a pirate as ever raised a sail, sworn to deliver the whole of Westeros to the ironborn.

The covers

Hardcore fans will notice that the goblet is a lot less flat. I think the bronze works beautifully.

All of the emblems will be embossed and George R.R. Martin will be in foil.

We really do hope you like them. All feedback is encouraged! We know that fans of the series have been waiting a long time for these.

‘Fantasy literature has never shied away from grandeur, but the sheer mind-boggling scope of this epic has sent other fantasy writers away shaking their heads… Its ambition: to construct the Twelve Caesars of fantasy fiction, with characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias’ Guardian

‘Truly epic … with its magnificent action-filled climax, it provides a banquet for fantasy lovers with large appetites.’ Publishers Weekly

‘I always expect the best from George R.R. Martin and he always delivers A Game of Thrones grabs hold and won’t let go. It’s brilliant.’ Robert Jordan

‘George R.R. Martin is one of our very best writers, and this is one of his very best books.’ Raymond E. Feist

‘Colossal, staggering … Martin captures all the intoxicating complexity of the Wars of the Roses or Imperial Rome in his imaginary world … The writing is always powerful …’ SFX

The Game Begins…

I would be extremely remiss if I didn’t share this new, superb teaser from HBO… it’s bloody fantastic! Tell me, Voyager blog readers, is there a particular character that you are most excited about being brought to life on the big screen? I think before the series started, I would’ve said Tyrion, but I get shivers every time Aidan Gillen comes on the screen as Littlefinger — I think he’s perfect for the role!

Game of Thrones confirmed for Sky

George R. R. Martin has confirmed on his not-a-blog that Winter is Coming… to Sky for UK viewers.

It’s great to know they’ve got a network on board – and one that is bound to get 100% behind the show. In the meantime, if you haven’t already, why not check out the fantastic teaser trailer from HBO?

George RR Martin – Most anticipated show of all time?

…but we knew that already, didn’t we?

The Guardian has a great article about the anticipation surrounding HBO’s small screen adaptation of A Game of Thrones (although by their definition I guess this is the ‘nerd’ section of the web!) We also hope that the BBC announces they are officially picking the series up too… with a ton of excitement being generated this side of the pond, they’d be mad not to!

In the meantime, why not share the GRRM-love? If there’s anyone you know out there who’s not yet into GRRM… drag them into the nerd section of the bookshop, point them to Amazon or lend them your old beaten up copy of A Game of Thrones and get them hooked on A Song of Ice and Fire.
