We love dragons

With the end of The Inheritance Cycle readers might find themselves having dragon-related withdrawal. Common symptoms include googling “Dragon books” and watching Dragon Heart over and over and over and over(etc) again. No one should ever subject themselves to that much Kevin Costner…

To get your dragon fix why not try a dragon book that you’ll love if you enjoyed The Inheritance Cycle books…

Temeraire

Naomi Novik

This book is one of my favourites. In my opinion the writing is sophisticated, the descriptions are beautiful and the story is quite simply one of the best I’ve ever read.

Captain Will Laurence has been at sea since he was just twelve years old. Rising on merit to captain his own vessel, Laurence has earned himself a beautiful fiancée, society’s esteem and a golden future. But the war is not going well. It seems Britain can only wait as Napoleon plans to invade.

After a skirmish with a French ship, Laurence finds himself in charge of a rare cargo: a dragon egg bound for the Emperor himself. Dragons are much prized: properly trained, they can mount a fearsome attack from the skies. It falls to one of Laurence’s men to take the beast in hand and join the aviator’s cause, forcing him to relinquish all hope of a normal life.

But when the newly-hatched dragon decides to imprint itself on Laurence, the horrified captain’s world falls apart. Gone is his golden future: gone his social standing, and soon his beautiful fiancée, as he is consigned to be the companion and trainer of the fighting dragon, Temeraire…

Day 8: Twelve Days of Christmas

Kirkus has released its Best of 2010 list for Sci-fi and Fantasy and Voyager has two HUGE names on there: Robin Hobb’s Dragon Keeper and Naomi Novik’s Tongues of Serpents.

And what a coincidence that today’s recommendation happens to suggest one of these amazing female fantasy authors!

On the eighth day of Christmas, Voyager recommends to you…

TEMERAIRE — NAOMI NOVIK
Recommended by Amy, Voyager Assistant Editor

‘I first picked up this series while at uni and devoured it. I also couldn’t stop talking about it. I fell in love with Laurence, I fell in love with Temeraire and most of all I fell in love with Naomi’s writing. When I found out I was coming to work at Voyager, Naomi was one of the authors I was most excited to get to work on. Come on Peter Jackson, use your option and make these movies!! I would love to see these Napoleonic Dragons flying around on a big screen.’ – Amy

Naomi Novik’s stunning series of novels follow the global adventures of Captain William Laurence and his fighting dragon Temeraire as they are thrown together to fight for Britain during the turbulent time of the Napoleonic Wars. Captain Will Laurence has been at sea since he was just twelve years old; finding a warmer berth in Nelson’s navy than any he enjoyed as the youngest, least important son of Lord Allendale. Rising on merit to captain his own vessel, Laurence has earned himself a beautiful fiancee, society’s esteem and a golden future. But the war is not going well. It seems Britain can only wait as Napoleon plans to overrun her shores. After a skirmish with a French ship, Laurence finds himself in charge of a rare cargo: a dragon egg bound for the Emperor himself. Dragons are much prized: properly trained, they can mount a fearsome attack from the skies. One of Laurence’s men must take the beast in hand and join the aviators’ cause, thus relinquishing all hope of a normal life. But when the newly-hatched dragon ignores the young midshipman Laurence chose as its keeper and decides to imprint itself on the horrified captain instead, Laurence’s world falls apart. Gone is his golden future: gone his social standing, and soon his beautiful fiancee, as he is consigned to be the constant companion and trainer of the fighting dragon Temeraire!

Book of the Month: Tongue of Serpents

This month’s book of the month is The Tongues of Serpents, the sixth book in Naomi Novik‘s  incredible fantasy series that follows the global adventures of Captain William Laurence and his fighting dragon Temeraire. Renowned for their originality, these are the perfect solution for anyone who likes their historical fiction on the fantastic side, as the two characters fight for Britain during the turbulent time of the Napoleonic Wars.

This time, Laurence and Temeraire have been found guilty of treason, and have been banished from their home country. Deported to Australia, not only do they leave behind the country they’ve fought so hard to protect but also the friends they have made in the British Aerial Corps.

Coming Soon from Naomi Novik:

The Tongues of Serpents (September 2010)

Convicted of treason despite their heroic defence against Napoleon’s invasion of Britain, Temeraire and Laurence – stripped of rank and standing – have been transported to the prison colony at New South Wales. With them travel three dragon eggs intended to help establish a covert in the colony, and destined to be handed over to second-rate, undesirable officers willing to accept so remote an assignment – including one former acquaintance, Captain Rankin, whose cruelty once cost a dragon its life.

But instead of leaving behind the political entanglements of the war, Laurence and Temeraire sail into a hornet’s nest of fresh corruption. The young Australian colony has been thrown into turmoil after the overthrow of the military governor, one William Bligh – formerly Captain Bligh, late of HMS Bounty.

Eager to escape this political quagmire, Laurence and Temeraire take on a mission to pioneer a route through the forbidding Blue Mountains and into the interior of Australia. But when one of the dragon eggs is stolen from Temeraire, the surveying expedition becomes a desperate race to recover it before the dragonet hatches – a race that leads to a shocking discovery and a dangerous new obstacle in the global war between Britain and France.

Forgotten Treasure; Naomi Novik’s Temeraire

Temeraire by Naomi Novik is one of those stay-up-all-night novels. It is set during the Napoleonic wars, with one vital difference… dragons. These huge, powerful creatures make up an air-force manned by aviators, as well as a human with which they have bonded. Temeraire is beautifully written and cleverly imagined – it manages to be both funny and moving. I tore through the rest of the series in a month after starting this book, and cannot recommend it enough!
